The Facts About Scannell’s 1st Pct. Lease
This week, Joe Scannell announced that Nassau County has signed a lease
agreement to construct a new 1st Precinct facility in the Rosen
Shopping Center on Grand Avenue in Baldwin.
For months, Chris Browne has asked Scannell to answer some basic questions
about the terms of the lease. Scannell has refused, and now we no why. Here are
the facts that every taxpayer needs to know about Scannell’s deal for the 1st
Pct.:
FACT: The lease awards the landlord’s
construction company a $9.3 million no-bid contract to build the new
precinct—paying the landlord to renovate his own property. County taxpayers
bear full cost of construction, enough though the landlord will own the
building at the end of the lease.
FACT: The lease obligates County
taxpayers to pay all legal and approval costs associated with the construction,
and then bear all maintenance costs upon completion of the work, in addition to paying annual rent to the
landlord. Therefore, the landlord makes no investment in his property
whatsoever—County taxpayers pay all costs and give the landlord rent on top of
those costs.
FACT: The lease requires County
taxpayers to pay all of the landlord’s real estate taxes on the precinct site.
For the next 30 years, our tax dollars will pay be used to pay a the landlord’s
commercial property tax bill, including his Baldwin School tax bill.
But Joe Scannell thinks this is a good deal for Baldwin and the 5th
Legislative District. In reality, it is a sweetheart giveaway to a wealth
landlord/developer that forces taxpayers to pay every dime of the cost for
construction, maintenance and taxes, and then pay rent too.
Hasn’t Joe Scannell raised our taxes enough already?

Browne Wins Conservative Party Primary
On September 23rd, the Nassau County Board of Elections declared Chris the winner of the September 15th Conservative Party Primary Election. Chris prevailed in an up-hill battle as a write-in candidate against his Democratic opponent, Joe Scannell, who also sought the nomination of the Conservative Party.
Despite the fact that Scannell was the “officially endorsed” candidate of the Nassau County Conservative Party, grass-roots Conservative Party voters rallied to Chris’ message of lower taxes and government reform. These voters rejected Scannell’s tax-and-spend record, and many refused to support Scannell because of his embrace of the ultra-left wing Working Families Party, the political arm of ACORN in New York.
“I am gratified and humbled by the large measure of support I have received from the voters of the Conservative Party,” Browne said. “This race shows that ideas and principles matter in politics. I am confident that the platform that carried me to victory this week—the repeal of the County’s new energy tax, support for cuts in County spending and opposition to reckless borrowing and fiscal gimmickry—will also lead to a win at the General Election on November 3rd.”
